The history of El Rompido as a town is relatively young, and as a tourist destination even moreso. In El Rompido there are remains of centuries past that have left their mark and thanks to the onliving tradition this is still a fisherman town. El Rompido has also been a place that has witnessed battles, wars, and waters. The first settlements are dated back to the phoenican era, Cartaya actually comes from the phoenician name Carteia, and in El Rompido they built the first salazon (conservation by salt to meats and fish) factories.
The area of El Rompido has been an area of continuous battles, new populations, destruction, and it is all reflected in the quantity of castles and forts that exist in this area from 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. It is for this reason that a visit to the many monuments is always a recommended idea. The Castle of Zunigas a National monument, or the Convent of Trinitarios are two of the defiante must see places.
If you are looking for a natural monument to visit the Flecha (arrow) of El Rompido is the place to visit. In recent history during the 20th century it created a name for itself. This fisherman town who has seen time go by and has experienced first hand the increasing tourism since the 60's. |
