El Rompido is a small nucleus belonging to the Costa de la Luz which belongs to the municipality of Cartaya. It has a population of no more than 3,000, yet in the summer the numbers double. Cartaya has a population of approximately 12,000. Two are the main economic activities that we must mention in El Rompido, fishing and tourism. It is a small nucleus that was born as a small fishing village along the Ribera and mouth of the Piedras River. It is a town that in the past 20 years has witnessed an incredible growth due to tourism, this has propelled a big boom in the construction business as they had to begin building hotels and apartments to accomodated the growing tourism.
El Rompido is the perfect spot to practice sports related with the ocean, like windsurf, sailing, diving, swimming and undoubtfully outdoor activities in general. Here you can go trekking, bike riding, play golf etc...If you are looking for a fun day you can also visit the aquapark with it's many thrilling rides as well as go-kart racing.
The beach in El Rompido is protected by La Flecha (the arrow), a sort of isthimus that flows directly into the Atlantic Ocean protecting the beach where you can get to by boat. It's flora and fauna, it's nature, and it's gastronomy are rich in products that come from the sea. The Natural Park of Las Marisma (marshlands), as well as the Piedras River and the Flecha del Rompido, perfect for nature lovers.
Spending your holidays in El Rompido means spending your holidays in a lovely fisherman town, who's festivities revolve around their patron saint of Virgen del Carmen, who is also the patron saint for fisherman in general. It is a small town on the sea with two lighthouses. Regardless tourism in El Rompido has been a significant source of income starting in the 1960's when the first tourists started to come, as well as the first tourists that came to spend their summer holidays there, but honestly the biggest growth spurt began in the coming of the 21st century when the construction of hotels, apartments and golf courses began to make a jump. |
